Competition to find Ten Innovative International Photogs

WIN-Initiative, a boutique stock agency created by award-winning photographer Hans Neleman, and Resource magazine, the publication guide for photo industry professionals, have joined forces to host their first ever FREE competition, 10 Best 10.

Open to photographers (both nationally and abroad) the 10 Best 10 contest aims to find today’s most striking, poignant, evocative and arresting imagery, as photographed by the most daring and innovative shooters around. To ensure maximum exposure, the contest is not only free of charge, but also free of categories and explicit rules. The only criterion to submit entries is that participants submit what they consider to be their best work. Up to 10 images can be uploaded at the competition’s Web site www.resource.win-competition.com.

The panel of esteemed judges include Pulitzer Prize-winning photo editor Stella Kramer of New York Times and Newsweek fame, graphic designer David Carson and Time Out New York photo editor Roberto De Luna, among others. The judges will select the 10 best images from all the submissions that they feel encompass originality, technique and vision.

“WIN-Initiative wanted to join forces with Resource in creating the contest for several reasons,” says WIN founder Hans Neleman. “The working model for WIN has been to help rising photographers grow into established, earning professionals. WIN achieves this goal by providing cameras, equipment and even free workshops to our team of photographers, all in the name of fostering commercially viable, superb talent,” he adds. When asked about the purpose of the contest, Neleman says, “WIN views the 10 Best 10 competition as yet another way in which to help rising and established talent compete in the changing global marketplace.”

Print on demand publishing has become more and more popular. Professional photographers and hobbyist are now able to order single press-printed hardcover and softcover books and magazines online and at relatively low cost. People are always asking: "who's the best?"

It would be cost prohibitive for most photographers to do this kind of test for themselves, or at least it wouldn't make sense when the finished product is only one or a handful of books, so we found 18 different printers throughout the spectrum and did a blind test. The printers didn't know (and most of them still don't know) that this book was a test for ASMP-NY.

We've taken 17 images plus some color and grayscale patterns and had them printed by 18 different POD printers. Come and judge for yourself which ones are the best. Compare images between books and Epson test prints. Decide which printers offer the best value for you. See the images, feel the paper and inspect the bindings and covers.

ASMPNY Outreach

ASMP/NY Board member Susan May Tell and special guest, NY Post staff photographer G.N. Miller, hosted a workshop on photojournalism for high school photography students at Tell's studio on May 13th. Their teacher, photographer Linda Kessler, Instructor of Art/Photography at Brooklyn College Academy, which is a public high school in Coney Island, had contacted ASMP to arrange this.

In addition to general information about photojournalism, with some great questions asked by the students, Tell and Miller discussed the benefit of owning the rights to their images and registering them with the Copyright Office. Tell showed a photo she took of Saddam Hussein which had been published at least one hundred times, including as the covers of TIME and The Economist, and explained that she was paid each time it was published. Miller discussed an exclusive image he took of Tupac Shakur which had been used without authorization by some major media outlets; he explained that his case was handled and settled by heavyweight IP attorney Ed Greenberg because Miller had registered the image with the © office. Students requested information about how/where to register their images and wrote it in their notebooks. One of Kessler's students took First Place in the Professional Women's Photography annual competition this year.

Blake's fascination with photography began in the eighth grade and he's been hooked ever since. He unselfishly shares his knowledge with students and other photographers through his involvement with the American Society of Media Photographers, most recently as an educator in ASMP's successful Strictly Business 2 conferences.

It's Blake's keen ability to make subjects feel at ease in front of the camera that takes him around the world to produce award-winning photographs for clients such as General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, American Airlines and Oracle.

A professional photographer for 20 years, he shares his home with his wife Lesley and his four year old son Blake. When not working, he's usually tinkering with one of his British-made vintage Triumph automobiles. His work can be seen at www.fireflystudios.com.
