Save the date — April 21, 2010
The American Society of Media Photographers presents an important symposium addressing the sweeping changes in the way images are used and distributed:

Copyright and the New Economy: Issues & Trends Facing Visual Artists
ASMP will bring together thought leaders representing different points of view on the subject of copyright to explore its significant issues, challenges and trends. ASMP believes that, in the face of sweeping changes in the way images are used and distributed, much can be gained by establishing a dialogue among representatives of the visual arts community, legal and governmental experts, and the publishing industry. This symposium is intended to seek sustainable business solutions by engaging in an important conversation about economic shifts in the industry, the current state of copyright, and what the future holds for those who produce and use visual works.

ASMP National Board Elections are Electronic this year

It’s almost here — the time to elect members of ASMP’s Board of Directors. All General Members of the Society in good standing are eligible — and encouraged — to vote from February 15 through March 15, 2010!

This year, to make voting easier for you, we have moved to electronic ballots. Here’s how the process works:
  • On February 15th, you’ll get an email from Votenet.com. (Please adjust your spam filters or check your spam files regularly.)
  • To vote, you will log on to Votenet.com using the special, one-time password that Votenet gives you in the email.
  • After you log on, read the instructions carefully and vote for no more than five candidates of your choice by clicking on the buttons next to each. It’s quick and easy and you’ll get a printable receipt of your vote.
  • The Votenet system ensures total confidentiality — no one at ASMP or Votenet will know how you vote.
Please encourage your fellow members to participate. Remember, your vote counts only if you cast it. This new voting system is designed to streamline the process and ensure confidentiality. Please contact Pete Dyson at dyson@asmp.org if you have any questions about it.
To learn more about the issues and the candidates, go to ASMP’s website before you vote — http://asmp.org/election-central

Update February 18, 2010: You should have received two emails with your voting login and password. If you haven't received these, please contact Pete Dyson at dyson@asmp.org

Members may have received emails from ASMP member Scott Highton alleging financial impropriety and adverse board and staff policy. The ASMPNY board encourages voters to read this narrative by ASMP Executive Director Eugene Mopsik, which provides clarification on the issues raised by Mr. Highton.

ASMPNY presents Greg Miller at School of Visual Arts

WHO:
Greg Miller is the recipient of a 2008 John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in Photography.  His most recent series of photographs, entitled Distant Relatives (photographs of his hometown, Nashville, TN)has shown in Los Angeles, is currently on exhibit at the Cheekwood Museum in Nashville and is scheduled to exhibit at +Kris Graves Projects in Brooklyn, NY in March 2010.  Miller was born in Nashville in 1967. He received a full scholarship to attend the School of Visual Arts in NY, and graduated with a BFA in 1990.  Since 2001, he has taught at the International Center of Photography in NY.  His work is widely exhibited and collected.

In Distant Relatives, Miller returns to neighborhoods and residences in Nashville where he grew up as starting points for his photographs.  In these locations he chooses to photograph people and places that loosely conjure the familiar character of his own past.   While obliged by a large format camera to interact with his subjects, Miller still retains the spontaneity of the photographic moment.  What emerges are well-detailed stories set in evokative landscapes with a trace of distant memory.

ASMP CT Chapter Jay Maisel event

Join us for an evening with Jay Maisel, a world-class photographer whose name has become synonymous with light, gesture, and color.
“Light, gesture, and color form the basis of all my images. This, coupled with an awareness of figure-ground relationship or photographic optical illusions, constitute half of the presentation,” says Maisel. “I will show you why and how images challenge perception. You do not always see what you think you see.”
Since his professional career started in 1954, Jay Maisel’s images have been used for advertising, editorial and corporate communications worldwide. He is widely exhibited and has numerous prints in private, corporate and museum collections. His books include Light in America, On Assignment (Photographers at Work), Jay Maisel’s New York, and his latest, A Tribute.
Jay has taught workshops since 1966 in Maine, NYC, Houston, Truckee, Aspen, Jamaica, Santa Fe, Italy and British Columbia, and he has lectured all over the USA, Australia and New Zealand. In fact, he will host six five-day workshops at his lower Manhattan studio alone this year.
His awards include the ASMP Life Time Achievement award, ASMP Photographer of the Year, International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award, and the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame.
Jay is a native of Brooklyn, New York. He earned his B.F.A. at Yale University and is a 1952 graduate of The Cooper Union where he majored in painting. At the beginning of his career, he worked with Swiss painter and photographer Herbert Matter, known best for his pioneering work in creating photomontages, and Alexi Brodovitch, who pioneered the role of the magazine art director in America at Harper’s Bazaar.
