Suggestions for photographers to read before the portfolio review:
Mary Virginia Swanson
A participant in the Student Program at FotoFest 2010
Suggestions for photographers to prepare for, and information about, the review event:
Photographers will wait in a line behind a reviewer they want to see. If that line is long and you see a reviewer that is available, jump out of line and go see them - you never know!
You will see approx 7 to 10 people, depending on wait time. There is no guarantee which reviewers you will see.
You will have 10 minutes to present your work to each reviewer, listen to their comments, and ask questions. A 'one minute warning' will be given
We recommend bringing one body of work with 10 to 20 images - big enough that they get a sense but not so big that it is difficult to get through in the time available.
No portfolio over 16x20 will be allowed for ease of reviewers.
Make the packing material easy to get through so as not to slow down the review. Time spent on packing/unpacking is included in your 10 minutes.
Bring leave behinds and leave behind your ego! This is about getting advice and making connections - if someone doesn't respond to your work, ask why but don't pressure them- this might be common sense but some people start arguing with reviewers and that doesn't really work out so well.
Bring your resume, bio and statements. These should be easily organized because time spent searching for them is included in your 10 minutes.
Also remember to bring leave behinds for the people you didn't get to see.
Read the reviewer bios, below, some of which list the type of work the reviewers are interested in seeing.
We recommend you 'google' the reviewers ahead of time to learn more about them.

The American Society of Media Photographers presents an important symposium addressing the sweeping changes in the way images are used and distributed:
Copyright and the New Economy: Issues & Trends Facing Visual Artists
ASMP will bring together thought leaders representing different points of view on the subject of copyright to explore its significant issues, challenges and trends. ASMP believes that, in the face of sweeping changes in the way images are used and distributed, much can be gained by establishing a dialogue among representatives of the visual arts community, legal and governmental experts, and the publishing industry. This symposium is intended to seek sustainable business solutions by engaging in an important conversation about economic shifts in the industry, the current state of copyright, and what the future holds for those who produce and use visual works.

ASMP CT Chapter Jay Maisel event
“Light, gesture, and color form the basis of all my images. This, coupled with an awareness of figure-ground relationship or photographic optical illusions, constitute half of the presentation,” says Maisel. “I will show you why and how images challenge perception. You do not always see what you think you see.”
Since his professional career started in 1954, Jay Maisel’s images have been used for advertising, editorial and corporate communications worldwide. He is widely exhibited and has numerous prints in private, corporate and museum collections. His books include Light in America, On Assignment (Photographers at Work), Jay Maisel’s New York, and his latest, A Tribute.
Jay has taught workshops since 1966 in Maine, NYC, Houston, Truckee, Aspen, Jamaica, Santa Fe, Italy and British Columbia, and he has lectured all over the USA, Australia and New Zealand. In fact, he will host six five-day workshops at his lower Manhattan studio alone this year.
His awards include the ASMP Life Time Achievement award, ASMP Photographer of the Year, International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award, and the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame.
Jay is a native of Brooklyn, New York. He earned his B.F.A. at Yale University and is a 1952 graduate of The Cooper Union where he majored in painting. At the beginning of his career, he worked with Swiss painter and photographer Herbert Matter, known best for his pioneering work in creating photomontages, and Alexi Brodovitch, who pioneered the role of the magazine art director in America at Harper’s Bazaar.

Learning From the Big Guys - How Does a Photographer Become a Brand? with Beth Taubner of Mercurylab
Photo: © Frank Rocco
Sponsored by:
Brands are about the marriage of fact and narrative. It's important to convey what makes you different - your special capabilities and traits - so that potential clients can easily understand what sets you apart from the competition. We will analyze über-brands that have been constructed based on an individual's identity (real or assumed), as well as well-known photographers and artists to see how they have done it. This talk is about sharpening your perception skills, so that you can talk articulately about your own - and your client's - brand. You will come away thinking like a brand strategist, and with some practical tools to use in looking at your own brand.

Special offer!
Take heart! As part of "Learning from the Big Guys", Beth is offering special consultations to ASMP members who attend the presentation. The most successful brands distill intellect, heart, and strategy to achieve ongoing success, and you can, too.
A one hour consultation, normally priced at $225, will be offered at the special rate of $175. In this overview meeting, we'll examine your concerns and goals and look for the connects and disconnects in your current brand communications -- or find out if you are communicating in a branded way at all.
For members who would like to delve deeper into their brand in order to effect real change, a three hour consultation is available for $500 (normally $775), in which we will work towards distilling what we call your "Brand DNA" -- your bona fides -- so that you can communicate a clearer and more integrated brand voice. In this session, we will review your portfolio as it reflects your particular characteristics, and develop a task list that will help you to put your new brand awareness into concrete action resulting in tangible changes.
Specially priced consultations must be booked and paid in advance within thirty days of "Learning from the Big Guys" presentation.

Competition to find Ten Innovative International Photogs

WIN-Initiative, a boutique stock agency created by award-winning photographer Hans Neleman, and Resource magazine, the publication guide for photo industry professionals, have joined forces to host their first ever FREE competition, 10 Best 10.
Open to photographers (both nationally and abroad) the 10 Best 10 contest aims to find today’s most striking, poignant, evocative and arresting imagery, as photographed by the most daring and innovative shooters around. To ensure maximum exposure, the contest is not only free of charge, but also free of categories and explicit rules. The only criterion to submit entries is that participants submit what they consider to be their best work. Up to 10 images can be uploaded at the competition’s Web site www.resource.win-competition.com.
The panel of esteemed judges include Pulitzer Prize-winning photo editor Stella Kramer of New York Times and Newsweek fame, graphic designer David Carson and Time Out New York photo editor Roberto De Luna, among others. The judges will select the 10 best images from all the submissions that they feel encompass originality, technique and vision.
“WIN-Initiative wanted to join forces with Resource in creating the contest for several reasons,” says WIN founder Hans Neleman. “The working model for WIN has been to help rising photographers grow into established, earning professionals. WIN achieves this goal by providing cameras, equipment and even free workshops to our team of photographers, all in the name of fostering commercially viable, superb talent,” he adds. When asked about the purpose of the contest, Neleman says, “WIN views the 10 Best 10 competition as yet another way in which to help rising and established talent compete in the changing global marketplace.”

In addition to general information about photojournalism, with some great questions asked by the students, Tell and Miller discussed the benefit of owning the rights to their images and registering them with the Copyright Office. Tell showed a photo she took of Saddam Hussein which had been published at least one hundred times, including as the covers of TIME and The Economist, and explained that she was paid each time it was published. Miller discussed an exclusive image he took of Tupac Shakur which had been used without authorization by some major media outlets; he explained that his case was handled and settled by heavyweight IP attorney Ed Greenberg because Miller had registered the image with the © office. Students requested information about how/where to register their images and wrote it in their notebooks. One of Kessler's students took First Place in the Professional Women's Photography annual competition this year.

Blake's fascination with photography began in the eighth grade and he's been hooked ever since. He unselfishly shares his knowledge with students and other photographers through his involvement with the American Society of Media Photographers, most recently as an educator in ASMP's successful Strictly Business 2 conferences.
It's Blake's keen ability to make subjects feel at ease in front of the camera that takes him around the world to produce award-winning photographs for clients such as General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, American Airlines and Oracle.
A professional photographer for 20 years, he shares his home with his wife Lesley and his four year old son Blake. When not working, he's usually tinkering with one of his British-made vintage Triumph automobiles. His work can be seen at www.fireflystudios.com. ASMPNY Annual Fine Art Portfolio Review (pdf bio's of the reviewers here)

Date: March 31st, 2009 at 6:30 PM.
You will have 10-15 minutes to present your work to each reviewer.
You will be given a printed bio listing the type of work the reviewers are interested in seeing. You can google all of the people to find out more ahead of time.
We recommend bringing one body of work of up to 20 images - big enough that they get a sense but not so big that it is difficult to get through in the time available.
Make the packing material easy to get through so as not to slow down the review.
Bring leave behinds and leave behind your ego! This is about getting advice and making connections - if someone doesn't respond to your work, ask why but don't pressure them- this might be common sense but some people start arguing with reviewers and imho that doesn't really work out so well.
Bring your resume, bio and statements. You will see approx 7 to 10 people, depending on wait time. With 27 reviewers if they all make it we will be in great shape. Also remember to bring leave behinds for the people you didn't get to see. If you see a reviewer that is available jump out of line and go see them - you never know!
At the end there will be a cocktail hour at the space- ASMPNY is requesting that you put your folios down and pick up your glass and mingle and socialize - no more reviews!

The Photographer's Survival Guide (for Today's Market) with Suzanne Sease and Amanda Sosa Stone
Today's photography assignment world is changing dramatically. With so much world devastation, the dot-com market going bust, stock vs. assignment, etc. ... how is a photographer to keep up?
Suzanne Sease and Amanda Sosa Stone are presenting a solution: The Photographer's Survival Guide (for Today's Market). This program is for all levels of photographers - those who are just starting and those who have been in the business for years and want to take it to the next level. The program is a 2-hour presentation and each participant will receive a "Survivor's Guide." The Guide covers everyday photography business basics to those uncomfortable "what do I do" moments in our industry.
The basics include information on:
- who to market to
- how to present it
- copies of estimates expected by clients
- copies of invoices that are expected when the project is finished
and everything in between! (like crew expectation to making the client feel like, well, the client.)
- The "what do I do" moments include real-life situations that arise in the industry. The Survivor's Guide is also a resource guide with helpful information including:
- correct usage terms
- portfolio makers
- website builders
- printers & fulfillment houses
- deadlines for important award shows (crucial to enter for greater success)
The bottom line... this is the photographer's guide on how to survive in this industry.

An Eye on the Strand Event with Hank Willis Thomas Pitch Blackness

Hank Willis Thomas gained wide recognition with his highly provocative series B(r)ANDED, which addresses the commodification of African-American male identity by raising questions about visual culture and the power of logos. Pitch Blackness, his first monograph, includes selections from this series and several others. With his characteristic pointedness and dark humor, Willis Thomas shows in Pitch Blackness why he is considered one of today's most compelling emerging artists.

An Eye on the Strand Event with Michal Chelbin Strangely Familiar: Acrobats, Athletes and Other Traveling Troupes
Michal Chelbin will discuss her first monograph, a provocative collection of photographs that depicts performers and wrestlers from small towns in the Ukraine, Eastern Europe, England and Israel. Her work straddles the public and private arenas, allowing viewers the titillation of getting a behind-the-scenes look without seeming intrusive or voyeuristic. Although Chelbin's influences--August Sander, Diane Arbus--are readily apparent, her vision is fiercely her own.

Fine Art Lecture by James Bleecker
December 10th at Allen Sheppard Gallery 530 West 25th Street
HIGH LINE: NEW PHOTOGRAPHS BY JAMES BLEECKER
"High Line: New Photographs by James Bleecker" is currently running at the Allen Sheppard Gallery, 530 West 25th Street, in Chelsea. The show has been extended to January 17.
Allen Sheppard remarks, "Bleecker captures the High Line at night through sheets of rain, from a puddle-hugging perspective. Out of mist the structure looms like a rivet-studded apparition. These atmospheric images wash over the viewer with a mood at once timeless and contemporary."
Edgar Munhall, Curator Emeritus of The Frick Collection, comments, "Technically perfect and rigorously composed, James Bleecker's photographs are capable of reducing you to tears by their melancholy beauty."
In the words of the photographer, “Catching only the odd headlight, traffic signal, or security light, the High Line at night is simply a dark presence, a shadow slightly less dark than the background. My favorite moments are when its outline merges with the night sky and you sense only a faint shimmer -- the heads of a thousand rivets flashing like dark jewels."
In addition to his gallery shows, James Bleecker has received commissions from David Rockefeller, The Morgan Library, The Frick Collection, and The American Museum of Natural History. In 2007 he photographed “Tuxedo Park: The Historic Houses” (Tuxedo Historical Society/Black Dome Press). Bleecker's photographs of New York City decorate the sets of the 2008 Dreamworks film, "Ghost Town." The artist lives in Greenwich Village -- a few blocks away from his family's eponymous street.

Lois Greenfield: Bodies in Motion
Wouldn't it be great to see how Lois Greenfield captures such incredible images of the human form in motion? The workshop participants will photograph some of Lois' favorite dancers in her studio in New York. Using Broncolor strobes that stop action at 1/2000 of a second, Lois' Hasselblad camera and her Leaf Valeo 22-megapixel digital back, the photographers will expand not only their ability to "see" the elusive moment of capture but imagine its narrative and emotional possibilities. Lois will explain how she achieves her signature crystal-sharp images and creates sculptural lighting for bodies in motion.
The group is limited to eight so everyone can shoot a lot. Participants can bring their own camera, film and/or software if they wish. Workshop Fee: $850 includes use of all Lois' studio equipment and a light lunch for both days, plus $100 dancer fee. ASMP members receive a 10% discount on the Workshop Fee.
Weekend dates available.

Assistants’ Night at Capsule Studio

If you buy pizza (and beer) they will come. And they did, to Capsule Studio for the annual assistants' night, sponsored by ASMPNY and APANY.
In a lively discussion, moderated by Jon Wasserman, assistants swapped experiences of the business of being a digital technician and advice on learning the skills to become one.
Many assistants mentioned confusion about their role on shoots. Should you be charging digital tech rates when you're asked to deal with digital files as well as carry out the traditional tasks of a photo assistant? For that matter, how do you define the role of the digital tech, and what are their responsibilities? Joseph Cartright, co-presenter of ASMP's Digital Roadshow offered the definition: "a digital tech is responsible for the ultimate file delivery." He added advice for digital techs working for luddite photographers: "what you should be is a mechanic, not a chauffer."
As with photography, the best way to learn digital tech skills is simple – assist someone who is doing it every day, and then do it yourself. James Sullivan of photoassistant.net advised "workshops will give you a good grounding and give you the skills to get in the door, but there are things that the people who use the equipment every day will teach you, that you just can't learn in a workshop."
Christopher M. Lynch, who co-presented the ASMP Digital Roadshow mentioned the importance of non-digital skills in making the transition from assisting to shooting. "To become a photographer, you need to be able to shoot and direct a set. Go out and shoot yourself some medium format digital."
Many people in the industry think digital tech skills have been "overrated," and rates will come down as digital skills become an essential part of an assistant's resume.
An assistant said "in the early days of digital, photographers didn't know what they were doing, so digital techs could charge huge rates. I just can't imagine how, a year from now, you'll be able to walk into a shoot without knowing this."

Stock Photography Seminar

Are you thinking like an advertiser? If you are, you have a better chance of producing the stock photographs that advertisers want.
At Capsule Studio, Karen D'Silva and Meg Asaro explained how advertisers sell their products by connecting with consumers' lifestyles and attitudes. Traditionally advertisers have used demographic characteristics such as age, race and income to target their advertising. Now advertisers increasingly use psychographic profiles to target consumers by their interests and aspirations. Karen said, "They're looking for an emotional hook to connect the consumers to their products. These are the things that can make your photos more marketable."
Karen and Meg took the case study of a fashion brand producing a line of sportswear. First sport must be broken down into different elements, from pre-game preparation through to the celebration of victory. For each element they showed examples of traditional imagery juxtaposed with illustrations of the same concepts aimed at people's lifestyles.
Demographics are still important. Advertisers are desperate to reach the multi-cultural market, but stock agencies don't have enough images with multi-cultural models. As a result two national brands happily used the same stock model in recent campaigns.
In terms of photographic style, Meg and Karen's advice is still to keep it real. Authenticity is still the most popular style for advertisers. "The shots must be real and we must be transported as viewers."

Why Specialization May Be Detrimental to Your Health:
Or How To Place Your Eggs in Many Baskets
with Ian Summers.

Think back to the first time you picked up a camera. Were you excited about shooting a multitude of subjects, or did you want to specialize?
Since the 80s photographers have been told to specialize, but Ian Summers says a commitment to vision is more likely to pay off over a career. "Art directors don't specialize, so why should photographers?"
A former creative director of the Creative Black Book and Random House, Ian now coaches commercial artists so they can fulfill their creative dreams. In Studio 3 at Shoot Digital, he told ASMP NY members about his approach and the techniques he uses.
Taking risks and making mistakes are essential, according to Ian. 95% of photographers are committed to safety, while the top 5% are committed to vision. The photographers at the top aren't afraid to take risks and make mistakes. As a result they grow creatively. He poses the question, "are you willing to give up security to grow?"
Quoting Jung, Ian explains that to find your vision you must first identify you passions and loves. Incorporate these elements into your portfolio shoots and you will find a vision you can sell. "Shooting personal work is an investment in your portfolio, and in yourself."
After an enthusiastic Q&A session, Ian finished his talk with a question and a challenge: "why would you not do what you love? And when are you going to do it?"
