Lois Greenfield: Bodies in Motion

Wouldn't it be great to see how Lois Greenfield captures such incredible images of the human form in motion? The workshop participants will photograph some of Lois' favorite dancers in her studio in New York. Using Broncolor strobes that stop action at 1/2000 of a second, Lois' Hasselblad camera and her Leaf Valeo 22-megapixel digital back, the photographers will expand not only their ability to "see" the elusive moment of capture but imagine its narrative and emotional possibilities. Lois will explain how she achieves her signature crystal-sharp images and creates sculptural lighting for bodies in motion.
The group is limited to eight so everyone can shoot a lot. Participants can bring their own camera, film and/or software if they wish. Workshop Fee: $850 includes use of all Lois' studio equipment and a light lunch for both days, plus $100 dancer fee. ASMP members receive a 10% discount on the Workshop Fee.

Weekend dates available.

Assistants’ Night at Capsule Studio

If you buy pizza (and beer) they will come. And they did, to Capsule Studio for the annual assistants' night, sponsored by ASMPNY and APANY.

In a lively discussion, moderated by Jon Wasserman, assistants swapped experiences of the business of being a digital technician and advice on learning the skills to become one.

Many assistants mentioned confusion about their role on shoots. Should you be charging digital tech rates when you're asked to deal with digital files as well as carry out the traditional tasks of a photo assistant? For that matter, how do you define the role of the digital tech, and what are their responsibilities? Joseph Cartright, co-presenter of ASMP's Digital Roadshow offered the definition: "a digital tech is responsible for the ultimate file delivery." He added advice for digital techs working for luddite photographers: "what you should be is a mechanic, not a chauffer."

As with photography, the best way to learn digital tech skills is simple – assist someone who is doing it every day, and then do it yourself. James Sullivan of photoassistant.net advised "workshops will give you a good grounding and give you the skills to get in the door, but there are things that the people who use the equipment every day will teach you, that you just can't learn in a workshop."

Christopher M. Lynch, who co-presented the ASMP Digital Roadshow mentioned the importance of non-digital skills in making the transition from assisting to shooting. "To become a photographer, you need to be able to shoot and direct a set. Go out and shoot yourself some medium format digital."

Many people in the industry think digital tech skills have been "overrated," and rates will come down as digital skills become an essential part of an assistant's resume.

An assistant said "in the early days of digital, photographers didn't know what they were doing, so digital techs could charge huge rates. I just can't imagine how, a year from now, you'll be able to walk into a shoot without knowing this."

Stock Photography Seminar

Are you thinking like an advertiser? If you are, you have a better chance of producing the stock photographs that advertisers want.

At Capsule Studio, Karen D'Silva and Meg Asaro explained how advertisers sell their products by connecting with consumers' lifestyles and attitudes. Traditionally advertisers have used demographic characteristics such as age, race and income to target their advertising. Now advertisers increasingly use psychographic profiles to target consumers by their interests and aspirations. Karen said, "They're looking for an emotional hook to connect the consumers to their products. These are the things that can make your photos more marketable."

Karen and Meg took the case study of a fashion brand producing a line of sportswear. First sport must be broken down into different elements, from pre-game preparation through to the celebration of victory. For each element they showed examples of traditional imagery juxtaposed with illustrations of the same concepts aimed at people's lifestyles.

Demographics are still important. Advertisers are desperate to reach the multi-cultural market, but stock agencies don't have enough images with multi-cultural models. As a result two national brands happily used the same stock model in recent campaigns.

In terms of photographic style, Meg and Karen's advice is still to keep it real. Authenticity is still the most popular style for advertisers. "The shots must be real and we must be transported as viewers."

Why Specialization May Be Detrimental to Your Health:
Or How To Place Your Eggs in Many Baskets
with Ian Summers.

Think back to the first time you picked up a camera. Were you excited about shooting a multitude of subjects, or did you want to specialize?

Since the 80s photographers have been told to specialize, but Ian Summers says a commitment to vision is more likely to pay off over a career. "Art directors don't specialize, so why should photographers?"

A former creative director of the Creative Black Book and Random House, Ian now coaches commercial artists so they can fulfill their creative dreams. In Studio 3 at Shoot Digital, he told ASMP NY members about his approach and the techniques he uses.

Taking risks and making mistakes are essential, according to Ian. 95% of photographers are committed to safety, while the top 5% are committed to vision. The photographers at the top aren't afraid to take risks and make mistakes. As a result they grow creatively. He poses the question, "are you willing to give up security to grow?"

Quoting Jung, Ian explains that to find your vision you must first identify you passions and loves. Incorporate these elements into your portfolio shoots and you will find a vision you can sell. "Shooting personal work is an investment in your portfolio, and in yourself."

After an enthusiastic Q&A session, Ian finished his talk with a question and a challenge: "why would you not do what you love? And when are you going to do it?"
